Students at The Hub considered themselves privileged to have a musician come into the centre with his Indonesian instruments. Gamelan is is the traditional ensemble music of Java and Bali in Indonesia, made up mostly of percussion instruments.
The session lasted a whole morning, and at least 25 students were involved in the experience, making it a brilliant team project to get involved in. Students were told about the origins of the instruments and guided how to play them, while others enjoyed watching their peers.
Several students gained merits whilst enjoying the experience and treating the equipment with the respect that it was due, as they were all over 100 years old (the instruments not the students!).
One student said he felt “what was impressive was just how quickly we came together and were able to play in harmony, without any formal lessons on the instruments.”
